My sister, Jennie, and I were not supposed to be friends. We grew up in a home with addiction, abuse, and mental illness, which generated dysfunctional dynamics that often pitted us against each other. Miraculously, we came together in adulthood to help each other heal. Now, we are telling our story to uplift others who came from homes like ours, so they can break the cycles of trauma, abuse, silence, and shame in their own families, and mend their sibling relationships, too.
